unfortunately there are people that aren't responsible, and those that breed more than they should, and some who breed simply to line their pocket and place with the first people that show up with the money. Many of those dogs wind up in shelters and many die as a result , beautiful well bred GSDs who never did anything short of being born . Some people seem to think they are just mixed breeds and poorly bred dogs in rescue, and that is far, far from the truth. Many days I have set here at my desk and cried over a dog that I never met that we didn't know about in time to save. Many times the shelter just kills them and never lets us know they are there . I rescued a dog last year that came in with 2 kennel mates who barked at people so they killed the 2 kennel mates and called on him . Grrrr!

My point was, that Jenni (especially) and other internet experts are wrong in their statements that neutered dogs can't work - or so as not to "twist" what they said - I quote Jenni - "The problem is that people who would adopt from a shelter don't typically want that kind of dog, and the people who do want that kind of dog (lots of US) can't get them because of rescue rules, and many don't want an altered dog for working. So, the poor dog will really be a misfit because few who can handle him would be interested in this situation. Poor freaking dog." "Many people are unaware of the significant changes in an altered animal because they have only ever owned altered pets and/or they don't do the things with their dog that would make them take notice. There is a laundry list (and most has been discussed many times on other topics so I won't say any more on this thread) of things that change when you remove an entire body system. Aside from that, it's surgery, and I have even heard of dogs having issues after anesthesia where scentwork is concerned. There will always be the ostrich clan who insists that only that single body part disappears and it bears no impact on the dog as a whole, but those who deal in reality and have no agenda (unlike nearly everyone pushing for spaying and neutering) know differently."
Jenni as an example has never trained a dog to a title or titled a dog, so how would she know if neutered dogs can or can't work. Listen to armchair experts like her and get the wrong information, then nice dogs like this one don't get a home because they are neutered. Thanks for helping this dog find a home Jenni! And ps I wouldn't sell (or give) one of my chihuahua (or GSD) puppies who indeed are raised in my home kitchen area - to someone like you. Dream on LOL
again, this looks like a fine dog and sure why couldn't he work if someone wants to work him - if he's sound in body and mind for working - lack of testicles won't affect anything at all except his ability to reproduce. Someone very lucky will get this boy. Just too bad his owner didn't try to find him a home earlier in his life so he had more of a chance to know what happiness is.

Molly I agree with you totally about this altering issue. I know Jenni got onto me about me neutering my boy. And this deal about the anethesia ruining their sense of smell makes just about as much sense as other things I have heard on the internet. My boy has been under 3 times and can smell just as good as any other dog. That and being neutered has not affected his drive or protection abilities. I also have a girl here that is spayed and a little on the quirkey side. She's not affectionate and doesn't care to be petted much or be real close to you. About 3 weeks ago I noticed she was just pesty--I mean she wanted to be CLOSE to me every second--I would wake up and she would be stretched out as close to me as possible. I went to the dr for a basic checkup and the day after they called me and said there was a problem and needed me to come in and do a lot of extensive labwork. I have to go in in a few days to get the exact results. In other words, I'm not dying but something isn't right. Now is this coincidence or what with this dog? She's still hanging right beside me--I believe she knows something isn't kosher. So I guess losing her hormones and being under anesthesia had nothing to do with her senses. I've been in this breed since 1986 and I have " learned" more about ridiculous claims on the internet than I ever thought I wanted to know. I believe it is up to every individual to do what they think is right for them and to not be lorded over or preached to by others who don't believe any way is right but theirs and also who have never walked in your shoes. We each know what is right for us.....................

Do you personally know any police departments that only works with dogs that are neutered/spayed?
Also nobody wants to talk about just how dangers anesthesia can be... just as long as you do the responsible thing by spaying and neutering your cats and dogs like what PETA would tell ya. I wonder just how many of these animals end up dying on the operating table from an adverse reaction to the drug.

I know of at least two police dogs without their precious nuggets. I know of three labs that are neutered, pulled from local shelter and they do scent work in my area. They do pretty well. Some dogs don't change because they get altered...
Everybody and everything is at risk under anesthesia..
that is not to start an argument.. just to point out that one's opinion must not necessarily be the rule.

And Pack, speaking of shelter dogs, there are a lot of places that ONLY use shelter dogs for scent work.
Not to get in a pissing match either but you guys who exclusively believe that only unaltered dogs can work need to come up with a better argument cause this one doesn't seem to be flying too well. If you believe in not altering dogs that's fine and it's certainly your privalege. But state that and don't pass on info that is only your opinion and bears no weight in real life.
