I have probably missed something, but just wondered why there are only 5 winners, yet there were surely about 20 studs donated? Keeping my fingers firmly crossed for Simone for the 1st.

Hi Gorsefield,

Sorry - yes you did miss the explanation - just over half way down on the first page.

Thanks again to all those who donated to this fund.....this from Simone's blog yesterday (written by a friend)

What awesome news! Simone has had her first transplant! They started the transplant at about 1pm today. The hospital staff lit two candles and said a little prayer to begin with..
Simone is doing well. She has experienced some side effects like a fine rash and she has had some difficulty in breathing. They have put her on O2 and are still monitoring her heart rate and oxygen levels.
When I chatted to her, she couldnt stop yawning..
Tomorrow they will give her a second transplant (from the same donor) It should take about ten days for them to know if the stem cells have grafted..

From Simone's blog yesterday.....

Great news!!! The new bone marrow is enjoying its new home and is grafting nicely. My cell counts are coming up nicely too, white cells are 11 (boosted by Nupogen) and platelets are 87! Highest they have been in ages! My tube did not come out today. They wanted to see if I could eat by myself first. It should come out tomorrow, thank God! I forced myself to eat as much as I could so it can come out, they seemed happy so I don’t see why it should not come out tomorrow. I should also be going home by Thursday/Friday! I can’t wait to take a deep breath of fresh air!

Simone's blog yesterday....

I am HOME!!! Well, not home home, but out of hospital. Which is great! Getting that first breath of fresh air was the most amazing thing ever! I cried when I said goodbye to all the staff, they were so amazing. It was happy and scary tears. To go from such high care to normal life is scary. I came out a week earlier than expected, they say its a miracle as to how fast my counts went up.
I still have a really bad toxic/metallic taste in my mouth from the chemo (it messes with your taste buds big time). Food tastes like nothing, and also has a toxic taste to it no matter what. But moms cooking is definitely wayyy better than the hospital!
I still had a few little hairs left that were falling out and irritating me, so we took a razor and solved that problem. Now I am totally bald! I have to wear a hood most of the time as my head gets really cold. Otherwise I am feeling ok, felt very tired today and a bit nauseous. I will now have a 3 hour appointment every week for the next 12 weeks. I will get a plasma transfusion every week, bloods done, and a check up. Starting next Thursday. So I will still be in Cape Town for the next 12 weeks and my central line will also stay in.
I am on quite a strict diet, no salads, restaurant food etc. Low bacteria diet. I have to be very careful for infection and temperatures now, or I will end up back in isolation. So I can’t go to any malls for now.
Thanks to everybody who came and saw me in hospital, and to everyone reading my blog, and for all the wonderful messages and phone calls!
x
