ilovemygsdnenz, Congratulations on your new bundle of joy, (I just love the little furballs!) Sounds like you made two good matches, in the end, afterall! altostland, Thanks for the info! And noticing the error! ... as if this piece of paper they call a Certificate of Pedigree is actually worth anything. LOL And my pup does have a big head. Another question, what does "dry" describe, and what does "TSB pronounced, does out." actually mean? Please bear with my newbie questions! I do appreciate your time. ~Deb

Het, I was not told the dog was shy. I could see her shaking and drooping while I petted her. But, when I asked him, is she afraid of me, he became somewhat irritated and said, oh, she'll toughen up when she gets older! The reason I got her was he said this is a dog your daughter could sit on. The gorgeous short-tailed pup he emphasized was extremely intelligent BUT she would test, test, and test me. Having had a calm, obedient lab/gsd/husky for eight years, I wanted another calm dog. The black gsd was calm, was obedient, and bonded strongly to me. I was so sad to give her up because she was such a sweet girl. She was so miserable in social situations giving her away was best for both of us, but it still hurt. I should have realized none of those puppies was what I wanted but after a three hour drive felt compelled to buy something. I asked the breeders of my puppy-to-be if they have done any temperament tests and he says they have done alot of work with these puppies with noise and toys, also they have met alot of people! I have high hopes for this puppy.

but you could tell the dog was shy? If she was well socialized with people do you think she would have reacted that way with you? YOu can't always take a persons word expecally with the dog right in front of you scared and shaking all over. I am sorry that you had to go through this, but only paying 500.00 for an 8 month old dog, and not getting papers on her to begin with should have been a sign. During your next look for a new dog. I would make sure that the breeder does some type of temp test that is on paper...ie the volhard temperment test...and you would need a dog that gets mostly 3s and 4s on this test. I have produced 3 handicapped assisant dogs and multiable therapy dogs and they all got this on thier tests. You will also have to expect to pay more than 500.00 for a dog from a breeder with papers. I would suggest going for a rescue just let them know what you are wanting to do with the dog and don't get one just because you feel obligated...wait for the righ one. It will come along. Good luck Heather

Het, the Jerland dog was not socialized. He told me they did not have time to do anything with her. I got her pedigree but did not look in the folder until I got home so did not know there were no registration papers. The puppy I am picking up from Vom Haus Miller German Shepherds on April 26, IS SOCIALIZED. My puppy-to-be is priced at $1,500 but the 15% discount they decided to give me since I gave Nenz (from them, free, retired show dog they were supposed to sell for a friend but has bad hips so they decided to give him away) a good home brings it to $1,275. They are letting me make payments. I don't want a dog from a rescue because I want the health guarantee. Also my Nenz's sire is Ursus vom Batu and I want another beautiful German lines dog. My new puppy is related to Nenz, whose temperament is awesome.

Ilovemygsdnenz, You found a breeder (Jerland) and they told you that they had to give the black female away because she was too shy, Yet you took her for 500 dollars and wanted to do psychiatric service work with her? I'm sorry to say this but you got what you paid for. You knew that this dog had some nerve problems and you still took her, I guess you felt sorry for her. If you don't mind.. can you please get this breeder who also had a bad experience with Jerland to tell their part of the story? Did the breeder bought the dog as a puppy and then it developed Hip dysplasia? Sorry to say that the German shepherd breed are prone to this kind of health issue. Let's just say that shit happens. Theirs risk of having a puppy. If the breeder did not return the dog to Jerland.. then thats the breeders fault. Jerland was doing the right thing by offering a replacement of the dog with equal value. You quoted “ I live on $623 a month” I do not think the German shepherd breed is right for your living standards. The breed is heavy maintenance. What if your GSD became violently sick? What are you going to do? Vet bills are extremely expensive.. With getting $623 a month, I suppose you are collecting public assistance, is not enough to take care of a German Shepherd dog.

Brittany, please read the posts carefully before you jump down somebody's throat! The OP stated that he/she got a puppy for $500 that turned out to be nervy and he/she had to give it away. The buyer was not told that the puppy was shy by the breeder (and although there were some warning signs not everybody is an expert at reading them). Plus I am sorry but what gives you the right to tell somebody what is right or not for their living standards??? You do not know ANYTHING about this person's living situation. How do you know that this person doesnt have their mortgage paid off??? I live in a very expensive state and let me tell you that after I pay my rent (which is my biggest expense) I could live pretty darn comfortably on $600 a month...

Brittany, When is someone's value determined by their $$ worth?? I have known several GREAT people on "Public Assistance" or on a "fixed/limited" income....heck!..after all,..aren't the MAJORITY of us all on a "limited" income??? I would NEVER deny an ownership of a puppy because the potential buyer wasn't "wealthy" enough. When it comes to the welfare of our loved pets...we always seem to find a way..$$ I find these types of posts appauling....do you read what your write?

I was waiting for someone else to post something to Miss Brittany before I jumped in. pen mouth, insert foot which is hat she does best. I highly resent what you had to say about people on fixed incomes not being able to maintain a GSD properly. First of all not all fixed incomes are public assistance. What business is that of yours anyway? I am retired and live on a fixed income and I guarantee you I have 2 dogs that are of higher quality than anything you have or will ever hope to. As long as I am physically able I plan on always having a shepherd. Thank God I don't have to depend on you to provide me one. If you ever go into breeding and you talk to customers the way you do people on this board you'll be damn lucky to find someone to GIVE them to much less sell them. The other thing is we all had to start somewhere and we all have to learn. Or maybe you were just born "knowing everything"? You really should make an effort to think about what you say6 and ignorant it makes you look......................

I think the Jerland kennel has proved themselves as decent breeders over the years. Since Larry Jerland hasn't given his side of the story I think it would be unfair to criticize him on this board without hearing his side. He's probably not one to stoop to defending himself on a site like this anyway kind of a "moot" point considering the ilk that come here. Have you actually talked to Larry? They even offer a training program for all their dogs they sell sounds like a pretty good deal. Birdy...

Come on now guys. Brit only picked up on the tone set by ilovemygsdnenz herself. She volunteered the info about her monthly stipend of $623, putting the figure as "low". Her judgment call. Brit followed--perhaps, unwisely. And, what's with the added comment about borrowing money from her daughter. No one's business. BUT--she's going to get a 15% discount, making the $1500 turn into $1275. All--ludicrous. I don't know anything about Jerland, but they got quite a bashing over a shy dog. As a matter-of-fact, ilovemygsdnenz lost me when she lost the sweet dog who was calm, obedient, and let herself bond to ilovemygsdnenzONLY.
