I am minded to compare the attitude of British Shepherds over the centuries to their working Collies, and their control of those Collies' innate propensity to try to bite the sheep.

Here is the elegance of the hypothesis that the a genetic trait is the independent variable in dog aggression:
appropriate genetics + obedience = controlled aggression( with some redirected in certain dogs )
appropriate genetics+ no obedience = overt aggression
inappropriate genetics + obedience= no aggression
inappropriate + no obedience = no aggression.
This explains why thousands of randomly owned dogs with no ob shows no aggression.

And what is "inappropriate" ?
Too much aggression or not enough aggression?
Strong or nervy?
Confident or insecure?
