A big show of respect to the individuals who helped this peace officer by fending off the pack. Did you notice the attention they gave the baby stroller? It looks like a major problem looking for a place to happen.

I have been to Chile many times.  I am not sure if this video is from the streets of the capital, Santiago, or not, but Chile has one of the worst stray dog problems in the world (in my opinion, because I have also been in other major cities in Latin America).  There is no official Animal Control to help with the problem.  I am not pro-neuter/spay across the board, but the situation in Chile is dire in terms of the sheer numbers of dogs on the streets everywhere. Purebred dogs are valued and are kept behind high walls and gates, but are never spayed or neutered and the "one litter" mentality prevails across the board with their owners.  Mixed breeds are not valued much at all and have been running the streets for generations.  The packs generally scurry away from humans because they have learned that humans will chase them away with rocks and kicks.  This pack in the video seems mainly interested in the police GSD.  Trust me, that police officer, called a carabinero, and his dog are very used to this on a daily basis, as are the people that navigate the crowded streets.

Stray dogs are very smart and have great survival skills. I have seen them waiting among people to cross a very busy four lane street safely by following the crowd. The policeman in the OP clip is obviously used to this and did just the right thing.

By staying calm he empowerd his own dog so an attack would be less likely. Moving slowly and alert without panic, is the best way to go. Not sure you can train on this.

street kids in brazil just before the world cup would have been lucky to get treated like these dogs, they would prolly still be alive.

The answer is IN the video, or would have been ...

At about a third of the way through, one sensible passerby

manages to shoo the stray pack away from the Police Dog

and set them running in the opposite direction.  IF said

passerby had continued this activity for a little longer, and IF the

LEO had had the sense to get the hell off-street, they would

almost certainly have forgotten about the GSD in their quest for sex

(clearly this was a pack brought together by the usual stray bitch in

heat).  BUT the cop chose to hang around, and the helpful

passing stranger didn't sustain their advantage, so the regroup

and subsequent events unfolded.

Hoy very funny! while they tend to go after you if you have another dog, they also just go after people and things.

When they take the bumper or plates off cars you have to get out to pick up your stuff.

What I meant was the cop could have used the distraction to just keep

walking calmly away,  he didn't at the crucial time, he stopped, turned to

see what the pack was doing, hung around ... three times that I counted

before he finally walked off.  And that gave the pack the opportunity to

find his dog again.

BTW if that was an 'attack' I'd hate to see a video of a real barny.

What we have seen in the OP clip is actually a pack of strays chasing the GSD of their domain. The wirst you can do is turn your back on them.

The LEO presumably knew they wood keep charging untill he was well beyond the boundary of their turf.
