Kalibeck

Did I hear my name? Not trying to hijack a thread...but if that dog had been allowed to stand more naturally, what do you think he would look like? Is the difference in Am Showlines & German Sowlines really conformational (is that a word?), or is it in the way the handler makes them pose & move? If you took a Am Showlines & never trained him/her for show or ever stacked him/her...would they still look like that? Not trying to be sarcastic, probably showing my ignorance, but really curious, do they stand & move like that naturally? My girl is 1/4 Am Showlines & 3/4 German Showlines, & she does not move or stack like that....so...??? jackie harris

Kali,

No, neither they nor German really "stand like that" naturally - almost never.

But, they definitely still look different when natural, whether standing or walking.  American show dogs have been bred so much for the almighty side-view trot (which is still not a good trot, if you ask me), that they cannot WALK correctly.  They walk sloppily as a result of long weak pasterns that they must throw out to the sides, or lift their shoulders to clear the ground!  You can see how clumsy many look just walking.

German dogs tend to move more naturally in a walk, from what I've seen.  Although the "show" type to me also has a not-good trot.

In any case, the walk is just 1 example of how you can tell.

I've tried to find a headshot of Kismet's Heart Throb, but no luck. However, since he looks a lot like his half-sib, Dallas, here's one of Dallas:

And here's what Jimmy has to say about his ears:

Interviewer: "What about his ears? You know in Akitas, we’re ear freaks".

"See here? I got beat for a Best In Show because of these little tufts in his ears. I think it’s cute on him. I could make his ears so much larger y’know, if I clipped ‘em out, but I don’t care. If his ears could be a fraction longer, that’s okay but they are the proper shape and at the correct angle. (he tickled the little tufts in the base of the ear) See here, if I took this off, the ears would look a half inch longer. But I ain’t gonna. It just happens to be like a birthmark on this dog. You don’t see that in Shepherds much. (smiling) It just wouldn’t be him, so it stays. One time a judge beat me in the Group and he said to me “I know it’s stupid but I had to make a decision, I love both of these dogs.” And the very next night gave me Best In Show. That was something special. Yep, the hair stays.”

Maybe it is a "Heart Throb" thing - those ears also look a bit short, as do Dallas'.  Of course, I also suspected Dallas' ears were partly a bit weak - flopped to the side, if you will, rather than holding strongly upward.

Well, he's got a lot better ears than his grand-daughter ( my pup)!

How badly would she be faulted on these ears in a conformation show?

Rose, Dan and Sandy are divorced, he's now living in NY and married to the former Marilyn Rossi. Her late husband was a prohandler. Sandy handled the dogs in Sch, put a Sch I on only one as far as I can remember, a dog named Quai v Sternbusch that Dan imported.  Quai sired my first GSD. Dan never trained or handled in Schutzhund to the best of my knowledge. He sent Jim to Germany to be titled and I'm pretty sure that the rest of his Schutzhund dogs were titled when he bought them from Germany.

Quote : Send a picture of your dog and your kennels, a copy of your scorebook and your helper Certification, and then we'll talk about a date for our nuptials. So much pressure. I am spinning. LOL Am I a nervebag ? ? ? Thanks for letting me down so easy. : )

Hey Blitzen, where is Sandy now, do you know? She used to be in our old Schutzhund Club (Maryland TOP Dog Club)  in the early 90's. And yes, if I remember correctly, she came to training with that dog, or was it Xin vom Anger? This dog is in my memory, because he is the only one so far I know which had an a-noch zugelassen and an OFA-Good.

Sunsilver, how old is your dog? The ears look weak with a lot of creases. You taped them, didn't you? I don't know about AKC shows but in a German show they would criticise the ears but let them go by if they were firm. Are they?

Dallas' ears are way too small for a male, but he also does not have a strong head. I have seen females with stronger heads like that. I also went over the first few paragraphs of that Moses interview (you provided a link on another thread), and I have to say it is sad that he openly brags that he bred this dog to females who would not OFA. Also, if this dog supposedly does all phases of Schutzhund, why not prove it to the ignorant fans of German lines and title him to at least SchH1. What gives? But at least Jimmy Moses admits that the "hock walkers" could not jump into the showring if they had to. Years ago in 1995, I took some friends of mine from Germany to a big AKC show in Bull Run Park, Manassas. Jimmy Moses was showing Mystique there. One of my friends is the breeder of a famous German kennel. He looked at these dogs and said: "They are crippled in the rear. The body proportions are off (too deep-chested and too long). The only thing I would love to have is the long upper arm, but it is too steep".

Hi Chris, that was probably Xin. Did he ever get a Schutzhund title?  If so, then Quai was not the only dog she trained and titled. Quai was an a1 and an OFA good and I think she trained him here in PA with the Mid Atlantic club. He didn't get his Sch I until 95 or 96 if I recall right.

I haven't seen Sandy for years, last I heard she is still here in PA, out of dogs, into horses. They sold their kennel when they divorced. I have to say that was one of the nicest kennels I have ever seen, just beautiful and very, very clean.
