I'ts "fairly new" considering how long Schutzhund has been around. Yes it began about 5 years ago.
I cross trained my dog for many different things, Schutzhund (SchH3), suitwork (PSA1 and Police K9 training...building searches, area searches etc), as well as explosives detection... there were several instances where I "send" the dog away from me. In trial for SchH during the send out (using the send out command) she went out 10 ft and started searching the ground. In SchH tracking on a windy day she would sometimes lift her nose if she was down wind of an article (didn't start this until after I started doing the random article search with her.)
Like I said it is certainly possible to do both without any problems...I was just advising of likely conflicts based on my experiences.
