rtd- Most of the shelters here in NC use gas or heartstick method.... the reason behind the use of gas is that LEO can use them
as well as AC.. they don't need a licensed vet in the middle of the night for a dog hit by car... my husband will tell you this first hand.

melba that is just sad.   I'm not for any method of putting dogs down but the gas chamber or heart stick is just wrong from my opinion of been there.

Ok, I do not mean to sound like a real bitch but how does anyone propose to pay for all of these ideas??  In a perfect world there would be a home for every dog and every dog would have an outstanding temperament.  However until we live in that perfect world it ain't gonna happen.  There are any number of dogs out there that do not need to live simply because they are not safe, to insure the saftey of John Q Public and the dogs themselves they need to be humanely euthanized. I myself have euthanized dogs that were tortured souls and needed to be released from their suffering.

And yes, many adoptable dogs/cats are eithanized every day, unfortunately there are not enough places for them to go and warehousing them until ones comes along is inhumane not to mention costly.  The money simply is not there.  As for policing breeders - who do you propose do that??  Again that takes money and who has that?  Animal controls are closing left and right, states are going broke and if you think any registry other than AKC (who is far from perfect) has ever inspected a kennel/breeder try again.  And who is going to dermine who is a puppy mill??  And how will it be determined?

The system we have is not perfect but it is what we have and sadly I have yet to see or hear a logical, afordable solution.

Good post, Judy P. I know of a woman who has EIGHTEEN cats, ( those were just the ones that were visible and could be counted) running loose, in the woods, killing birds. ALL, I mean EVERY SIGLE one came from the shelter, to be "fostered". She has a new dog from the shelter, seems like every week, while none of them are adopted out, no fences and wandering around loose. One dog has been living in a little ten or twelve foot pen, 24/7 in all weather for the past two years, being "fostered". Tell me that's sweet. The shelter is enabling a hoarder.

They have required Spay/Neuter laws here and sorry to say THEY DON'T WORK. The law breakers still break the law because they think they are somehow above the law. BYB'ers at their best. And rtdmmcintyre I'm not sure why you think that most of the dogs that end up at shelters are mutts. I have a purebred shepherd with me right now that was on her last day at the shelter. Shepherds come in my the dozens at CA shelters along with just about any other purebred dog you could think of.

They tried to get pet stores closed down here but they haven't been able to even slow them down. I personally would like to see puppy mills closed. Those poor dogs have to live horrible lives to suit someone's spur of the moment "need". I would also like to see breeders be required to take back what they breed. This would be two fold. For all the byb'ers who call themselves "breeders"  find that they is no longer such a cash cow in puppies especially when the dog came back broken, aggressive, sick (just what we find in shelter dogs). 2nd larger breeding facilities that pump pups out like they are mice, may think twice about placing their dogs in homes to anyone who has the bucks to buy. I've been slammed by this before (breeders taking back their own) but I believe strongly in it. Breeders say they will take back their dogs but when a dog is presented I personally do not know one that came forward and retrieved their dog from the shelter.

Buyers should not escape this either. Vets need to report people who refuse to alter their pets. Vets here post that spaying/neutering is the LAW but they don't enforce it. Turn the person in. There should be a state database that vets could turn in a client. The state can send a generated letter to let the owner know they are out of compliance.

Some of these things wouldn't cost alot but shelters/counties need to work smarter. I would actually volunteer if I could actually enforce some of the laws here already on the books. Write some tickets and remind people they are not above the law, no matter how much they think they are.

Vets should be given deputy badges, if they have to enforce laws. I bet people will just not take their dog to the vet, when the vets become law enforcers.

Barb all I can speak of is the shelter in Tallahassee.  I never said pure bred dogs didn't pass through and lots of them. but the majority are not pure bred dogs.  every are I suppose could be vastly different.

I also go by the theory that if you can't prove parentage then you can't prove that they are pure.  I'm sure we have all seen mixes that looked like they were pure even though they weren't

I applaud Marjorie for all her efforts to save dogs, but once you start believing that you have the right to take away the rights of others, you have started down a very slippery slope! And there are some very undesirable repercussions to giving dogs & cats personhood, making them wards of people, not possessions.

Admin, please remove this thread. It is turning into a political discussion involving rights and individual freedoms. I have absolutely no desire to turn this into a politically motivated free for all, so please remove.  I have taken it to another venue where it is about the dogs, not about politics. I will not  comment on it again.
