Hanging my ass out there... (Tracking) - Page 1

Since it's only me and my dog, no one else, I figured I'd share this video.

This is my young male, back in January after a 6 week lay off, doing foot step to foot step SchH tracking training.

As you can see, we're not perfect but he's got a very strong work ethic.  I was very proud of him that training day.

Good Job' the Dog was enjoying it you could see that by his tail wagging the whole time,
But we are Tracking young  Gina very much the same way as you are,and we were told Not to keep talking to the Dog, but to just give a little light correction on the leash if the dog speeded up but yours did not, and if the dog went of track not speak but guide it back on track by your hand. They do not speak but guide the Dog by the hand because they say it distracts the dog from focusing and if you talk to much when it comes to Competition work you cannot speak to the Dog and it becomes a habit with Dog and Handler, Just my two pence worth i thought i would share,

You make a good point and I do need to start weaning myself off the verbal praise with him.  He's just been a bit of a slow starter so everything has been 'BIG' in terms of praise and encouragement but he's getting the idea now, across all three phases and I need to start softening up.

Very nice video, thank you for sharing.  I guess someone was following with the camera....pretty nice that the video person was not too distracting for your young dog.

Yes someone was kind enough to walk the track with us and run the video.  We normally track with people walking along side, gets the puppy used to concentrating and working no matter the distraction.

I did not see your ass one single time. FALSE ADVERTISING. HA HA

RLHAR  what did you use to lay track? just currious... and how far apart, it seems like it was maybe 2 feet apart?

In this instance we were using hot dog since it had been 6 weeks since his last track.  Sometimes I use his kibble when he 'tracks for dinner' just depends on grass/ground conditions.  As you can see, the ground was frozen and the grass was dead so for a young dog that's a lot of work, hence the hot dog treats.

They're every footstep actually.  I kick my heel into the ground to make a divit, tuck the small (about a quarter of the hot dog) into the divit so he can't just run down the track 'sighting' the hot dog and then make the next step.  Laying this kind of track is a PITA and it takes about 45 minutes to lay a 2 minute track but I've had good results with it.
