In some of the books I've read, it says that chew toys are okay and that they take their attention away from chewing on other things, but at the place where I took my dog, Addie, for basic obedience, they said that it isn't ever good to give chew toys because dogs can't differentiate between something they're supposed to chew on and something they aren't. I'm so confused I don't know whether to let my dog have chew toys or not. Thanks. p.s. When the people at the training place talked about chew toys they grouped bones in the same category.

Tell them they are idiots and it is much better to give your dog a proper chew then have him seek his own. It is never anything you are too please about. Well, don't actually TELL them they are idiots, just think it in your head.

Halix,
I'm still a novice but you just have to be vigilant.  I think you can give your dog toys/chew toys but still watch them.   My dog is a year old now and I still have to watch her.  If she's bored then, yes she's going to get into what she should'nt.  You've just got to keep an eye on 'em.

Might I suggest a change of "training" (using the term loosely) place??

Thanks.

beetree:  I do think they're idiots. i don't like it there very much any more. Their facility is amazing, but I don't like the people.
xD

JRANSOM: yeah. Addie will be a year at the end of this month and she does chew a lot.

I have a puppy and from the first day I noticed she wanted to chew on my dresser I gave her a bone (not raw hide) and she never chewed on anything since then. Now I wish I would have known that as a child, I had two dogs that would chew everything even my uniform for school. Give your dog all the chew toys you can afford just make sure they dont swallow the toy chunks if they break it up

A "trainer" should know better, what a ridiculous thing to say. Of course your puppy needs things to chew on, dogs are certainly smart enough to know the difference between something you gave them and something you did not. Find a dog trainer that actually knows something about dogs.

they don't know, I suggest not giving like a squeek shoe or paper for they will see the real thing as something they can chew but bones and such they can have

Wow, it's amazing to hear that advice coming out of a trainer. What a boob.

I mean, no, it's not fair to give a dog something like an old shoe or tennis ball and then expect him to distinguish between the ones he can have and the ones he can't, but no chew toys at all? Dogs have a powerful need to chew. Not providing anything safe to chew on is a good way to wind up with armless sofas and three-legged tables...
