Last Thursday we picked up an emaciated German Shepherd who we called Casey. She was wandering among traffic at a busy junction at Agios NIkolaos. Her legs were buckling under her and she was totally exhausted and very afraid.

She has obviously had one hell of a life on a short chain - looks like she was a breeding machine.

Her teeth are a mess and so were her nails which have now been clipped. Her front left foot is turned out (pointing to 9 o'clock) and her back legs are weak. The vet said she has some degree of displacia but the main problem was weakness from lack of food and water so we will know more about that when she has gained some weight - she is 20 kilos under weight now.

The vet treated her skin problems which will soon allow her hair to grow back.

She has obviously been sleeping on the ground and has sores all over - not Leishmania which she thankfully tested negative for.

Apart from that she is a beautiful gentle girl (with people and other dogs) and she clearly had no pleasant human contact before. She just looked at us confused when we stroked her and it was really difficult getting her into the car but now she loves the car and keeps nudging us for strokes.

We are feeding her puppy food and she gets calcium and a multivitamin supplement daily.

She drinks and pees a lot but she was severely dehydrated so we will see if that continues once she is completely hydrated again.

Would glucosamine be good for her joints? If so, do you know how much would be right for her? She weighs 25 kilos but the vet said she should be 45 kilos.

Talk soon

Best wishes

Joan

Oh the poor, poor thing.  How kind of you to take her in.  Did the vet check to see if she is now pregnant?  She has quiet a tummy on her considering how many bones are showing.  I'm sure you are correct in stating she is a puppy machine.  Poor wee thing.  Just get her fattened up and keep loving on her.  Are you planning on keeping her yourself or putting her up for adoption?  Glucosomine will probably help but I don't know how much you should give her.  I just buy it from the grocery and when it says for an adult to take three, I give my dog one and consider that good.  That doasage made a difference on our dysplastic girl.  Good luck with her.  Please keep us posted and send updated pics as she blooms into the dog she should be under your gentle, loving care.  Bless you and thank you for caring about this unfortunate girl.  God surely guided you to that intersection at just that time.  Keep her safe and don't let her go back to the hell she escaped from.

Thanks debisue,
She is not with me she is with a friend out in Crete
but after seeing her condition and how sweet she is in spite of her treatment
I think she deserves to live out the rest of her days in comfort .
my dad lives out there and the work Joan does is fantastic even paying for the dogs to be re homed abroad!!!

This makes me sick.... Pictures like this make me want to go on a rampage...She looks so pitiful...Thank God you were at that intersection at that exact moment...I am sure you will take care of her..I bet in her better days she was a very nice looking dog...Hopefully she will be able to get somewhat back to that. She does have some Gray on her muzzle, which could mean she is alittle up in age, or it could also mean she had a very stressful life, which is obvious. POOR BABY GIRL...

Just as Debisue said, THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU for taking care of this girl....

Get me a address I,ll send the old girl some money to help. Some people are only alive because it,s illegal to kill them...

Yes...please post where donations can be made.
The sad truth is......there are many dogs out there in the same situation...
Perhaps the people who frequent this forum, can send donations to assist...(any denomination).
I will.

omega 3 derived from animal (not plant) sources would really help her skin, fur, heart, and overall health issues.
