HELP! She is scratching in the area that her vaccine was given. She was 12 weeks old at the time and it was her first full puppy shot. She is still scratching. There is no lump, no other factors that would be involved (in my estimation). No other signs of distress. How long will this last? What do I do? I am afraid to go for her second shot later in the month. Will it go away on its own? Please help me.

First of all, relax.. you sound like you are about to amp out!! Reactions to shots are not unusual, itching would be one of them.. however at her age I would also suspect that she is starting to lose some of her puppy coat (see that black shiny spot on her tail?) and that is also an itchy time.. any time a dog blows coat, their skin gets drier because of the dry dead hair.. Of course, there are also other things that can cause itching like flea bites and the change of season pollen occuring right now. You do want to mention the reaction to your vet so they can put it in her record.. they may want you to give her benadryl before her next one.... You can probably try some Benadryl now also, again call your vet for the dosage for her size. Of course, a more severe reaction (such as the one my husbands pup had)... vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, lack of appetite.. is a bit more serious and caution needs to be taken to make sure they don't get dehydrated... (incidentally, this reaction did not occur with the next shot that had no Corona in it) I would also look at all the components of this first real shot and maybe find a culprit. I have also seen adult dogs exhibit these reactions as much as a week after a vaccine .... Of course, swelling in the area would also mean the vet needs to be called... Good luck with your pup

Me? Amp out? Yup, that is my style (smile) Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I am supersensitive as my current GSD mix has allergies. I didn't want my GSD bitch to be facing the same problems. i have heard much about potential autoimmune responses due to vaccines and heard much from my breeder as well. I will try and talk to my vet for some information. Thanks!

Ha, you know how I could tell?? I am like the queen of amping out!! We can always spot our own kind, lol!! Check out the internet for Dr Jean Dodds, she is like the pioneer of immune system study.... she has a vaccination protocol that is very interesting.. You may also find it on www.naturalrearing.com

My puppy went through the same thing, except he was also kind of sick and out of it for several days. We went back to the vet and he is fine. If you're worried about it, take her back to the vet (they usually have NO charge if it's a reaction to meds that they gave her). Good luck! :)

DKIAH -- nice post and good feedback :-) -- wonderful that this site can be useful to people by postings like yours -- instead of people bashing / foolish topics / annoying advertising- promotions
