I brushed my puppy out today. I thought he had some mud dryed and caked on his back. Well it turned out to be bloody dandruff looking stuff. Stinks to high heaven and I caused him to bleed a little bit before I saw what it was. I have had a dog with the same thing before but she was older and it was a long time ago. I already called the vet and we will be going tomorrow in the am. Does anybody have an idea what it is and what causes it and how to handle or prevent it from happening again? No doubt the vet will send me home with something to put on it, I just would like to know of any natural cures and preventions for next time.

Most likely it is a sebaceous gland cyst....... They are common and probably cannot be prevented, but can be kept cleaned out once one knows one is there. Hard to say for sure, but the vet will know once he/she sees it.

They just had this up on the bulletin board. If you go to Search messageboard above your message and type in hot spots it will give you a lot of information. Hope that helps!

Thanks Kelly I did read that post but still not sure. I'll find out what the vet has to say and what they prescribe. I havn't noticed him chewing at that spot but have seen his skin is flaking but so is mine, with the cold winter air. He has been just itchy all over since we have had him. It's definatly not fleas though causing the itch. Should I give him a salmon oil pill every day?

OK well off to read my vet book about skin issues.

Another scratching GSD LOL. I don't think a salmon cap would hurt him, but your vet might have something with more omegas and fatty acids. Everyone has his/her their favorite remedy for dry skin in dogs. Alpha Keri diluted with water - 1 teaspoon to a gallon or warm water- and used as a dip or spray might help too. It will make his hair slick and oily looking but it does ease scrtaching in many dogs. Good luck.
