Xeph

by Xeph on 24 March 2016 - 22:03

FINALLY got a stack of Rumble that doesn't completely suck. His back end is finally joining us back on earth and he's looking pretty decent. My only complaint right now is that he's stressing me out because he's small. Otherwise he is coming along quite nicely :)

Relax...the European lines mature much slower than the American lines, so it probably seems like he's behind on the growth chart. He's not even 12 months old yet, right?

Lovely shoulder, especially for a working line dog. He's gonna be a stunner when he's fully matured.

He's 8.5 months old. Two of my boys from my second litter are 26" at just shy of 9 months (they're friggin' HUGE...was unexpected).

He's lovely Xeph, though I still prefer Maus to all of 'em.

Strauss Mouse is kind of the best dog in the whole universe.

It's his height I'm paranoid about :p Everything else will come, I know :)

He's not done growing yet. The American lines have long been selected for faster maturing--the faster they mature, the faster they can finish their championship and get in the whelping box or be offered at stud. It's not limited to the GSD, either--I've never been a fan of the fact that the AKC never established a minimum age for awarding championships...IMO, a dog that looks mature at less than 2 yrs old is at risk of looking course by the time it is that age. But this is the US, and that's how we do things. Don't even ask me what I think of the UKC conformation program.

Under the SV system, on the other hand, the German dogs can't get their BH until they're 15 months old, have to be 16 months to do the AD and 18 months for the IPO1, and can't be breed surveyed before they are 2 yrs of age, there's no real advantage in selecting for dogs that will be physically mature at 12 months of age.

Give Rumble his time, and he will most likely reach the height you're looking for, if that's what the genetics behind him is expected to produce.

And/or will be dead.  I have purposely selected for slow maturing animals because I like them to be alive past age 5.  Soul Eater and Moto won't look like anything until they're 4 years old.  The bones are there, though (literally and figuratively).  Moto still looks plenty immature, but only needs four points to finish...hoping that'll happen next weekend :)
