I believe most who commented on any of the show photos did say that they are basing their opinions on still photos only. I know I did and I also remarked that when I saw Peik and Chacco in the flesh I thought they were better dogs than their show photos indicated so would question the way show photos are staged and obviously photoshopped.

To get back to Smiley's original question - why are the front legs on GSL's set back so far. IMO that is because they generally have longer upper arms and more forechest than most ASL's. You can see that very well on Shaw's liiustrations. Ideally the point of the elbow should fall naturally directly under the highest point of the withers. Some of the herding dogs pictured here, the Mali especially, have too straight a front and their front legs appear to erupt from their throats; they have little to no forechest/brisket. They will most likely have a stilted gait and would not be able to cover much ground in one stride.

Maybe you should read what I said again, Shatterhand. I SAID they look better in person, not worse. Jose' no longer owns either of those dogs and he hasn't posted here for a long time. I don't know why he and his partner sold either of of them; none of my damned business to speculate.
Jose was gracious enough to enter both of those dogs at our little Dec 2014 local show at my request - I was the show chair- so we could see them in person. We had some AKC judges coming to observe and I thought it would be good for them to see both of those dogs too. I will say nothing negative about Jose' or his partner.
I was with VanDorrsen when she judged and critiqued both Peik (V1 veterans class) Chacco (V2 in the working class, V1 to the lovely young Sultan son, Santo) at our show so I know what you are referring to; she spoke to the handler privately and what she said will not be repeated by me on a public internet forum.
Margit had also seen Chacco many times in Germany. I wasn't judging their condition at the time I was referring to their basic structure which looked better in person than it did on their Urmas. When I can't even recognize my own dog from her Urma taken at the BSZS, I don't put a lot of confidence in any photos.
Since Americans are bad dog owners, I will assume you don't sell any of your dogs here.

Uhhhh....no. The top dogs are trained constantly, gait constantly, can and do go MILES. I should know...I do it. There are AmLines out there that have ADs and BHs
