Protection Drive - Page 1

My GSD 3 year old female has been doing on leash protection and short distance master protection  for a year now and has been doing great. We have been testing her long distance protection , but she has been inconsistant with the drive. Today we decided to not continue with the  off leash due to the lack of consistency/drive. She hits the sleeve hard on the leash and short distance. I'm going to go back and brush up on obedience and do occasional protection work. I just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced the same thing . She is from the Rikkor line of show and Sch

Without seeing video I would say these are the possible  reasons.
1.Lack of confidence.
2.Too much attachment to you without being able to work independently. 
3. But most likely, your dog is missing a foundation in prey drive development oriented towards protection or it does not poses appropriate prey drive. 
Prey is what  get the dog after the decoy/bad guy. If the dog has adequate prey drive and confidence/nerve,s this is then easy fix.

So many times people will rush the training of their dog...Wanting the dog to work and to bite...So they rush into working the dog in Defense...Defense creates many other things that might not be wanted in the desired result...

A young dog needs to mature and grow into their inate drives...Defense Drive is one of those drives...A young dog can and should be brought along slowly...Thru Prey Drive and then when ready thru Defensive Drive...

I think too many people rush their training and don't know how to read a dog and what they can handle and should be used...Most of the time a trainer won't ruin or hurt a dog using Prey Drive...but if Defense is taught too early and incorrectly then irreverseable damage can be done...

I believe prey and defense must be developed as the dog's maturity is ready for it  and thus allows such development. I call it parallel training where I do not believe  first this and then that. I believe : Work on it if the dog is  ready.  You need to figure out if your dog is more prey or defense dog. 
 Generally these days more dogs are naturally prey driven thus prey drive training will dominate the training, but that does not mean that at the same time  defense development should be omitted.  
Some dogs are more defense drive then prey driven thus defense  drive training will dominate the training, but that does not mean that at the same time prey development  should be omitted.
Finally dog needs to learn to channel prey into defense  and  defense into prey. Skilled and knowledgeable decoy will do that for you.

We would need to know about your training - do you train the SchH routine or some kind of "free style" ? Does she work out of prey or out of defense? Does she have a calm grip on leash while the decoy presses her a littlebit? There are several steps in training between on and off leash, short and long distance. Mostly people misread the signs of the dog, they await too much, one step back is better than 2 steps forth. Try to use a leash a littlebit  longer than usual, she needs to know that you are there, ready to help,no off leash right now, and never send her if she doesn´t show enough drive. During basic training the dog always needs to feel comfortable, always needs to be the winner. Something went wrong, but difficult to say what, without seeing the dog.

I wouldn't stop doing Protection Work if she enjoys it...It sounds as though she lacks Confidence...You must teach her to bite at shorter...in between...distances...As was said above...Use a longer lead...Maybe a 30' lead and be there for her if she needs some help... ~Bob~

I do have a very bonding relationship with my girl. The last time we trained I had one of my 14 year old boys with me. She hit the sleeve on master protection and tehn released and ran towards him, she then turned around and charged the sleeve again. She kept looking at him during training. She has no Sch. training and went straight in to protection work at the age of two. I would like to continue working with her. Is she too old to join a Sch. Club. We have an awesome one next to my house. She will defiitely protect my family and home without a doubt. I woudl like to just stay busy with her.

I believe she does work from  a defensive drive. She started on the wall and then moved up to the leash and master protection at a short distance.
